First Supermoon of 2025 to illuminate UAE skies in October
The Hunter’s Moon set to rise larger and brighter than usual
DUBAI – Stargazers in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) will soon experience a striking lunar spectacle as the first supermoon of the year, the Hunter’s Moon, rises next Wednesday (October 7).
Appearing larger and brighter than a typical full moon, this celestial event will mark the beginning of an active skywatching season across the country.
The moon will remain visibly full until October 9, creating several nights of dazzling views.
What makes it special?
The Hunter’s Moon occurs when the full moon reaches its closest point to Earth, making it appear up to 14 per cent larger and 30 per cent brighter than usual. Its size does not physically change, but the well-known “moon illusion” creates the impression of a much bigger disc when viewed near the horizon, particularly against familiar objects such as buildings or trees.
When to look up?
The supermoon will rise just after sunset and is expected to dominate the evening sky, glowing brightly above the Emirates. No telescopes or equipment are required, though darker areas away from city lights will provide the best viewing experience.
What’s next in the skies?
This month’s supermoon marks the first in a series of celestial events. The Orionids meteor shower will peak on October 21 and 22, followed by the year’s largest supermoon, the Beaver Moon, on November 5.
The Leonids meteor shower is set for November 17 and 18, before the final Cold Moon of 2025 appears on December 4.
The season concludes with the Geminids meteor shower on December 13 and 14, promising a display of up to 120 meteors an hour.
